Revolution in earthmoving with IoT and AI

In major infrastructure works, earthmoving is one of the most costly and complex items to manage. Traditionally, the lack of real-time visibility forced decisions to be based on intuition or retrospective data. Ferrovial, through its Digital Hub and in collaboration with Sngular, has broken this barrier with Connected Works, a solution that transforms vibrations into data to optimize fleets and resources.

Managing what cannot be seen

Within a linear project spanning several kilometers, such as a high-speed rail line, coordinating hundreds of trucks and excavators is a monumental challenge. The main problem lay in "operational blindness": site managers had no way of knowing in real-time if a truck was stopped, loading, or en route, beyond what they could physically see or communicate via radio.

This information void led to reactive and delayed decision-making, generating inevitable bottlenecks and downtime for high-cost machinery. Furthermore, the absence of objective records not only hindered the correct daily sizing of the fleet but also caused frequent discrepancies in invoicing with subcontractors.

The challenge was not just technological, but one of usability: the solution had to work on heterogeneous machinery (owned and rented), in hostile environments, and without complicating the operators' lives.

The Solution, ConnectedWorks

An autonomous digital "brain" for the construction site

To solve this challenge, Sngular and the Ferrovial Digital Hub designed a "plug-and-play" solution capable of operating in hostile environments and with any type of vehicle.

Autonomous and intelligent hardware: An energy-autonomous IoT device was developed, equipped with GPS, accelerometer, and gyroscope. Its installation via magnets allows it to be placed on the dump bed of any truck in minutes, without cables or complex installations, facilitating its use in subcontracted fleets.

Advanced algorithms: The differential value lies not only in the hardware but in the data processing. Sngular created a proprietary algorithm that analyzes vehicle vibrations to automatically identify critical events: when material is being loaded, when it is unloaded, and when the vehicle is moving or stopped.

Digital ecosystem: All information is uploaded to a platform that offers a productivity dashboard with performance KPIs and cycle times, as well as interactive maps to visualize work zones, embankments, and fleet location in real-time on KML plans or orthophotos taken by drones.

This allows for total traceability, facilitating precise control of every cubic meter moved, from origin to destination.

Data-driven decisions

The implementation of ConnectedWorks has transformed daily operations in large-scale projects, such as the Tiétar AVE or High Speed Two (London-Birmingham).

Quantifiable results include clear resource optimization, with reductions of up to 20% in machinery wait times, accelerating project completion and increasing profitability.

The construction site acquires great operational agility, as the solution provides the ability to detect anomalies (such as unusually low speeds) and correct them immediately.

Additionally, thanks to the availability of more precise data, it is possible to more easily certify transport distances and payments to subcontractors.

Operational efficiency and real-time traceability

The implementation of ConnectedWorks transforms the profitability of major infrastructures by achieving a reduction of up to 20% in machinery wait times, thus accelerating execution deadlines.

Unlike standard tracking systems, its differential advantage lies in an exclusive algorithm that analyzes vibrations to automate the traceability of the production cycle (loads, unloads, and transport) without human intervention.

This data intelligence, combined with autonomous plug-and-play magnetic installation hardware, allows digitizing heterogeneous fleets in minutes and facilitates real-time decision-making, replacing manual estimates with precise certification of every cubic meter moved.

With ConnectedWorks, it is enough to open the platform to see if a team has more trucks than necessary, if the average speed in a section is unusually low, or if there are prolonged waits in a specific area. Everything is extremely transparent.
